Background
Blessed with a happy childhood in East-Berlin throughout the late stages of a crumbling system in East-Germany, prior to the wave of changes that came with the re-unification, definitely made an impression on my perceptions and memories. Also, the fact that Stefan grew up in an extremely contrasting environment, literally at the junction of century old villas, heavy industrial plants, vast rail yards, lush forests, a massive power plant, the headquarters of the Soviet Military Administration and Soviet army barracks in the area of Karlshorst (Berlin), probably had a profound impact on his photographic sensibility, considering that many of these contrasting places underwent a series of stark transformations after Germany’s re-unification.

"A fond memory I had as a boy with 2 of my best buddies.. the thrilling exploration of storage facilities, bunkers and offices in the just abandoned (and barbed wire fenced) Soviet army barracks, directly adjacent to our “forest kingdom”. The blend of industrial brutalism, serene nature and people living in-between is likely something that stuck with me."

Venturing out to Asia in 2005, he again found the visual codes retained from his childhood (this time just extensively larger and more detailed) - to that end Stefan became visually enthralled by the rapidly transforming environment in Hong Kong, albeit a transformation due to different means. A fascination grew, countless shutter clicks later…back to Berlin… another transformation happened in absence.
